Our Tips For Curating the Perfect Bedroom

A bedroom is more than just a place to sleep - it’s a space where we seek solitude and relaxation after a long day. If you ask us, we would say it’s the most important room in the home. As a result, it deserves a little TLC when it comes to designing and decorating! From the wall colors down to the accents and decor, every inch of a bedroom should feel like a personal oasis. For our clients in Charlotte, NC, our goal is to curate a space that is inviting, inspiring and comfortable. We understand that a well-designed room can significantly impact your mood and overall well-being, so we strive to make each bedroom the perfect escape from the everyday hustle.

We follow these simple tips when designing and styling bedrooms in order to curate the perfect bedroom and are sharing them with you so you can do the same!

Setting the Scene - Wall Color

Choosing a wall color is a top priority in our bedroom design process. Although the paint color should reflect your personal taste, it should also set the tone for relaxation and rejuvenation. We often lean towards neutral tones for a soothing backdrop, as they complement rather than compete with other design elements in the room. We love to add pops of color elsewhere! We tend to gravitate towards soft color with warm undertones such as Revere Pewter or Balboa Mist by Benjamin Moore in bedrooms.

Sleep Tight - Bed & Bedding

The bed is the centerpiece of the bedroom, making it the the star of the show so to speak! As the focal point, selecting the right bed is crucial for setting the tone and style of the room. When choosing the perfect bed for a space, we always consider scale and materials. Depending on the client and space, we may opt for an upholstered bed, a wood frame bed, a combination of all three, and the list goes on! Equally important is the bedding, which should be as comfortable as it is pretty.

When it comes to bedding our mantra is simple - incorporate layers! Whether you’re a hot or cool sleeper, we use super soft, breathable fabrics that look as good as they feel. We often use a mix of coverlets, duvets, quilts and pillows to introduce color, depth and texture into the space. This approach not only adds visual interest, but also enhances the coziness and inviting nature of the space.

All About The Accents - Nightstands & Seating

If the bed is the star of the show, the accent furniture - such as nightstands and seating - are the backup vocalists! These pieces support the lead but must harmonize perfectly to compliment and enhance the performance. When it comes to nightstands, there are so many options: large/small, different materials, open shelving, all drawers, or a mix of both. Our rule of thumb when selecting nightstands is this: pick an option that controls your clutter. If you know books and chapsticks are going to pile up, opt for a nightstand with drawers so that you can do yourself a favor and keep your personal retreat feeling tidy. Your nightstand should balance well with other furniture pieces in terms of scale, style and color, be functional for daily use, and fit comfortably in the space.

If you have the room, we also recommend adding seating to your bedroom. This could be in the form of a bench, a chair or even a daybed. One of our favorite choices is a bench at the end of the bed. This small detail enhances the ambiance of the room, and also provides a convenient place to sit or relax without messing up your expertly made bed!

Window Dressing -Window Treatments

We often get asked which style of window treatments work best for a bedroom and our answer is that it truly depends on the individuals sleeping preference. It’s important to consider the different functionalities and levels of light control they provide. Do you want a little light peeking through in the morning or would you prefer it to be pitch black until your alarm goes off? Whether it’s drapery panels, Roman shades, plantation shutters or blinds, each option offers a little something different. Our personal preference for ultimate privacy, relaxation, and light control is layering unlined woven Roman shades with blackout lined drapery panels.

J’adore Decor - Odds & Ends

Once we have selected all of the “big ticket” items such as the bed/bedding, accent furniture, and a rug, we turn our attention to the decorative elements that bring the space to life. This includes adding pillows, artwork, mirrors, and accessories. These details are what truly transform a bedroom into a uniquely personalized and inviting space. A few go-to favorites of ours to personalize your space are three Euro pillows with a long lumber on the bed, original art with lots of texture, a throw blanket draped over a bed or bench, and fresh floral on your nightstand. If you are located in the south, may we also suggest an overhead fan! If you are a hot sleeper, you definitely need one.
